Well written photography book...
I'm considering turning a hobby into a career, and so don't know how professional photographers would rate this book. I thought it was very informative and readable, and especially liked the numerous references and addresses for getting additional information on a particular topic. Chapters include careers in photojournalism, advertising, freelance, travel, government, and medical photography. The book also discusses digital photography, the internet, and the fact that current technology is changing how photographers do their jobs.

Colette's Christmas/Cakes, Cookies, Pies and Other Edible Art from the Author of Colette's Cakes
Published in Hardcover by Little Brown & Company (November, 1993)
Authors: Colette Peters and Alex McLean
Average review score:

A Christmas to Remember!
Colette Peters is a true artist. Her cakes, which I've seen in person, are remarkable. Her books are very thorough and concise. I am no artist, but I have made several of her cakes and they all turned out great! She is able to explain the cake-making process so that even I can understand how to do it. I have all her books and love them all!

Creative Black & White Photography
Published in Hardcover by David & Charles Publishers (January, 2002)
Author: Les McLean
Average review score:

Creative Black and White Photography
Les McLean has produced a wonderful book to inspire darkroom and lightroom black and white printers of every ability. He is a great photographer and master printer who is happy to share the secrets of his trade with the rest of us.

McLean is an ex Geordie miner and rock and roll player who has spent 30 years honing his skill becoming one of the foremost black and white printers. He learnt his art by his own trial and error. He now teaches in England and the United States and has, at last, been persuaded to write his first book. He debunks many of the esoteric theories and concentrates instead on the essential practical techniques needed to make expressive prints.

This book was revelatory. Its central theme is to learn to adapt our seeing by pre-visualising how our photographic tools see and record what we chose to photograph. He first demonstrates how to produce an expressive negative and then leads us to techniques to turn it into a fine print.

Although most of the book deals with traditional methods, Les recognises that the two techniques can work together to take our image making into new directions. He shows how simple it is to use and configure Photoshop to produce digital negatives and apply darkroom techniques to produce sensational images.

This is certainly the best black and white book I have read. It has blown away the cobwebs, witchcraft and confusion of other manuals. I eagerly await his next book.

Dorothy Donnelly: A Life in the Theatre
Published in Hardcover by McFarland & Company (September, 1999)
Author: Lorraine Arnal McLean
Average review score:

I'm amazed there's not more in print about this woman!
I was fascinated to read about the life of this woman who was truly a wonder of the American theatre - at various times, she was an actress, director, producer, playwright and songwriter (whew!). Her roles in Candida and Madame X are still remembered today but for some reason there seems to be little out there about her today (and if you know of more, please email me). I loved this book and NOT just because it was the only book I could find on this woman, but also because the photos, bibliography, chronology and index make a very well-rounded and researched publication. Well worth the expense, one of my favorite books about little-known, but fascinating, figures of the theatre world.

Drawing from Life
Published in Paperback by International Thomson Publishing (1997)
Authors: Clint Brown, Chervl McLean, and Cheryl McLean
Average review score:

Figure drawing books don't get any better than this one.
"Drawing from Life" is a treasure an artist, teacher, and drawing lover finds once in awhile. It is very logically layed out. I enjoyed variety of illustrations, the learning exercises, and glossary. Alas... some negatives: the price, the quality and detail of the reproductions, especially the anatomy ones. The book needs to be bigger in size and make use of detail enlargements to show the beauty of the drawings
